The Courage Course - The Fundamental Elements of Courage
Courage is the act of facing your fears.
As Eleanor Roosevelt put it, "You gain strength, courage,
and confidence by every experience in which you really stop
to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you
think you cannot do."
Are you afraid of something?
Are you afraid of taking some action?
Note that Eleanor Roosevelt did not say that positive
thinking was courage. Thinking positive is not courage.
Talking to your friend about what you are going to do is not
courage.
Eleanor Roosevelt said that you MUST DO. You must take
action to overcome your fear. Only through taking action can
you become more bold and courageous.Through action directed
at your fear, you overcome the fear and build your courage.
Thus, we realize that in order to become courageous, you
must embrace the first fundamental element of courage-
action.
* The first fundamental element of courage is take action!
Courage is also requires that you have the strength and
conviction to follow your conscience. Listening to your
conscience isn't enough. Once again, action rules. Courage
is the ACTION of obeying your conscience. This is what
defines courage.
"Conscience is the root of all true courage; if a man would
be brave let him obey his conscience." - James Freeman
Clarke
Note that just listening to your conscience is not enough,
you must OBEY your conscience. You need to take action on
the things that you know are right. Do what is right,
because it is right! Take action and make the world a better
place by following your conscience.
* The second fundamental element of courage is to obey your
conscience.
When you listen to your conscience, then take action to obey
your conscience, then you are a person of courage.
So, becoming a courageous person is rather simple! You must
act upon the things you know to be good, true, and right.
Is there something in your community that needs to be
improved? What can you do to help?
Is there something in your family that can improve? What are
some simple actions that you can take to help make things
better?
Is there something in your life that you know you should
address, but are too afraid to do so? Is there some action
that you can take, that will help you overcome your fears?
The fundamental elements then are action and conscience. Do
good things. Act responsibly.
Make sure you are in the best health possible, so you can
take action and do those things that will help others and
improve your world. Just thinking about it, or just talking
about it are not enough.
